(E)-3-nitroacrylonitrile
Substance index - selected nitrocompounds tested by our group /

CAS: 76954-16-0
MW: 98.06112
Brutto formula: C3H2N2O2
B.p. [oC]: 53-54/3.3-3.4mmHg [Ref.]
Density [g/cm3]: 1.268 (20oC) [Ref.]

Preparation [Ref.]:
2-Chloro-3-nitropropioniotrile (402g, 3 moles) was added dropwise in one hour to a stirred suspension of anhydrous sodium acetate (297g, 3.3 moles) in absolute ethyl ether (500mL) at 0oC. Immediately after addition was completed, the red suspension was filtered free of sodium acetate and sodium chloride. Ethyl ether and acetic acid were removed at reduced pressure; the residue was distilled under nitrogen to yield: volatile product (265.5g, 93%), b.p. 59-87oC (3-4 mmHg) and residue (31.9g). Refractionation of the volatile product under nitrogen in a glass-packed column (24*2cm) gave (E)-3-nitroacrylonitrile, a yellow oil (231 g, 2.35 moles, 78.9%).
